“A human being is part of the whole, called by us “Universe”; a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest—a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely but the striving for such achievement is, in itself, a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security.”
Albert EinsteinThe survival of our planet and ourselves depends on the realization that we are part of the environment. We need to re-conceptualize our relationship and maximize our connective participation. This is not a merely theoretical idea; it has to come through direct and immediate experiences.

Cleaning as a practice is the first step towards this understanding. Praising purity, it affects our body and mind in equal measure. Through cleaning, we express our respect and appreciation towards ourselves, others and our direct surrounding. We learn to reconnect with our physical environment and internalize it by actively engaging with it. Cleaning changes our awareness and perception. It promotes independence, helpfulness, and consideration. Moreover, we learn to correlate our actions with their cause and effect. Necessary to maintain a healthy equilibrium, cleaning is part of our life as a recurrent cycle. With this project we aim to praise cleaning as religious atheism, practiced through daily rituals of cleaning one's body, direct surrounding, and the environment. Kirei is a set of cleaning utensils designed to promote this cleaning activities while metaphorically expressing their value. The collection consist of three parts: “Litter-Rings” to collect rubbish a “Dust- Bracelet” to care for once direct surrounding and “Pollution-Necklace” for cleaning face and body.

RESEARCHCleaning against the Dictatorship of Efficiency

In 2019 conducted we conducted a research as part of our artist-in-residence at the Villa Kamogawa, Goethe Institut Japan, where we explored Japanese cleaning culture as well as its related crafts.

Based on our observations and experiments we developed a theory about cleaning as a mindful act promoting a wholistic world view reconnecting us with nature.

 CLEANING
_BODY & MIND

Cleaning one's body does not only remove dirt, but it also reduces residues of the past - like the feeling of guilt or doubts about past decisions. It, therefore, is part of many religious practices.

By cleaning one engages in a dialogue between body, mind, and nature.

A simple task - controlled and repetitively performed - allows the mind to wander, eventually bringing once full attention to experiencing the present moment without judgment.

Changing perspective, leaving the path, moving and re-experiencing nature while reconnecting and finding inner peace.

Cleaning is a mindfulness training that allows us to experience our life as part of a bigger whole.

CLEANING TOOLS

The value of a task is expressed through the design of the tools with which it is being performed.

Cleaning is a mindful activity that functions as a mediator between body, mind, people and the environment. Cleaning tools should be therefore designed with these aspects in mind taking aesthetics, functionality and material lifecycle into account.

During our research residency in Japan, we explored Japanese traditional cleaning tools, which are made from natural materials by hand following hundreds of years old rules and traditions.

Symbols of both beauty and youth, the ephemerality of flowers are a reminder of the brevity of life and the inevitability of death.

This series of rubber vases spires to acknowledge both the beauty and transience of life. The colour and shape of each vase are inspired by the transformation process undertaken by a bouquet of flowers developed in collaboration with Marsano in Berlin.

In a poetic manner, Design Impressionism rethinks the interrelations of 19th century window glass production against a backdrop of emerging Impressionist painting.
The series consists of a coffee table on which digitally printed Japanese woodcarvings from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam are situated in a dialogue with traditionally handcrafted window glass. The glass of the mirror, which is produced in the same process and subsequently silver-plated, reflects the light and colors like a surface of water moved by the wind.

Background
The painting that gave the famous Louis Leroy’s article its title and earned an entire group of artists the designation as Impressionists was Claude Monet’s Impression, Soleil levant.

The artists had painted it in his birthplace of Le Havre, showing a view of the harbor from a window in his apartment. Everything in the pictures flickers and remains indistinct. The motif is merely an expression of the atmosphere or - and this is what we would like to explore in the following - it was exactly what he saw: a distorted image through the imperfections of the window he looked through.

In the 19th century, the majority of the glass windows were produced though first blowing large cylinders, which were then cut open and rolled out on an iron plate. The quality in comparison to windows as we know them was however rather poor. Large fluctuations in thickness, bums, and inclusions were almost inevitable. The effect of this glass creates a beautiful painting like impressions of whatever is seen through it.

Japonism
A major influence on Impressionism was Japanese art prints (Japonisme), which were brought into France after Japanese ports reopened to trade with the West in 1854.

In 1867, Japan held its first formal arts and crafts exhibition at the Paris Exposition Universelle. The exhibition attracted a great deal of interest and resulted in everything from Japan becoming stylish and fashionable. On the crest of this wave were woodcut prints depicting everyday life, celebrating the nonheroic, based on the idea that all is transient.

Japonism transformed Impressionist art by demonstrating that simple, transient, everyday subjects could be presented in appealingly decorative ways. The Impressionists, and Post-Impressionists, admired the use of flat, decorative shapes, bright colors, and asymmetrical compositions which assisted them in exploring new ways of painting and printmaking. The stylized featured in Japanese prints appeared also in Art Nouveau graphics, porcelain, jewelry, and furniture. New technologies in printing and publishing moreover allowed this new style to quickly reach a global audience.

Iron and Glass architecture - Greenhouses
The use of glass as a building material was heralded in the middle of the 19th century by Joseph Paxton’s Crystal Palace for the Great Exhibition. Glass and iron revolutionized architecture and introduced a new type of building - the greenhouse. Exotic plants could now grow in a controlled environment for the urban population seeking recreation.

The production of these big glass plates was possible through the rolled plate method, introduced by James Hartles in 1847. The technique involved glass being ladled onto a cast iron bed where it was rolled into a sheet with an iron roller. This method creates a ribbed finish on its surface. The table cathedral glass used in this project is produced with the same technique, generating identical effects.

“In a the near future, when fossil fuels will be scare, oil will not be burnt away and wasted in energy and transport but reserved for high value processes and products such as plastic manufacturing.” (Ray Hammond, futurist)

Plastic will be the legacy of human kind and has been hypothesised to act as the maker of the Anthropocene – the name of the current geochronological epoch in which humans have become the most important factor influencing biological, geological and atmospheric processes on Earth.

“Ars Memorandi” has been designed with aesthetic concerns, combining technological progress with crafts, inspired from artfully crafted 16th century collector’s pieces. This symbol of luxury stands in contrast to the choice of its materiality aiming to question how we perceive, use and what we make from plastics today.

German belongs to the fourth-largest agricultural producers in the European Union.
Much of the land which used to be nature, became industrially managed monoculture.

The consequences are unmissable with countless wildflowers, plants, insects, and birds that disappeared or becoming endangered.
Agriculture has become the gravedigger of biodiversity. Inspired by the book “Das Ende der Natur: Die Landwirtschaft und das stille Streben vor unserer Haustür” (The End of Natur) we developed, in collaboration with seed manufacturers Saaten Zeller and porcelain manufacturer Kahla, a series of vases. Each vase is filled with native wild plant seed (regional seed) based on 22 regions of origin in Germany.
The project “Memories of a Flower Meadow” is a call for action. Everyone can contribute to help the environment through his or her behavior and the choices we make.

Germany is the largest dairy producer in the EU with new production records every year. For example, 33.1 million tonnes of milk were produced in Germany in 2018, although the number of dairy cows has decreased compared to previous years. But these productivity achievements are having their downfalls.

Milk prices are continuously declining, not even covering their production costs. Moreover, there are almost 380 000 tonnes of milk powder in stock in the EU.
This skim milk is now being sold on world markets, strongly affecting milk prices in developing countries such as West Africa. Cow milk production, furthermore, poses numerous threats to our environment by significantly contributing to greenhouse gas emission as well as air and water pollution.
Developed in collaboration with porcelain manufacturer Kahla, the projects “White Gold - White Trash” aims to question the production and value of food. Cheaper than porcelain glaze, milk is being used as a natural glaze, a nutritious aliment burned for decorative purposes.

To emphasize profit over diversity, only the most profitable objects of the company Kahla were reproduced. The result is a new collection, which forms a visual unit through natural milk glaze.

In Baroque still life painting, the expressive quality of wilting flowers conveys the finite nature of everything earthly.

This series of rubber vases is a reinterpretation of this concept for the context of the modern household, acknowledging both beauty and transience of life.A novel type of materiality was developed through combining the newest production techniques with handcraft. The process
utilises 3D printing, rubber rotation casting and freehand modelling to produce a flowing, matte surface overlaid with a sparkling pattern of jewel-like dots.

“Heimat” is the intersection between memory and space. The

desire for it increases with its loss; associated with feelings of
nostalgia.

Inspired by the region of Oranienbaum a small town in the region of Saxony Anhalt, we expressed the impossibility to return to places of once memories.

To capture this aspect, we designed a series of ceramic lampshades using exclusively leftovers found in the neighbourhood. We collected wallpaper, wood, coal and clay - a byproduct of coal mining in that region - together with other organic materials from local farms and fields.

All materials were fired, together with the ceramics, in a primitive pit kiln. Each lampshade captures unique traces of burned materials, referring to something forever lost.
